Last night I played a new game with Pat and Keith who I play with a lot, one guy from the last tournament and some of his friends. It was pretty mellow, low raises and beer drinking at some party house in the U-District. Over the course of the night I lost about $25 and it had all moved into Keith's pile, bastard! Then when I was the big blind with and Ace Four of Spades I got to see a free flop and it came up all mid-spades. I had flopped a flush with the highest card, the ace, what we call a nut flush! I bet $2 hoping to keep a bunch of people in to take their money, but everyone except for Keith dropped out. And he re-raised $5. And so it went with each card, I'd bet about $3 and he'd go over the top with $5. I was loving it, I was slow playing my big hand and he was trying to scare me out of the hand with his big stack of chips. He went all in with his last $18, I followed. After the last card I threw down my nut flush in triumph, for there was the $25 I had lost and a lot more in front of me for the taking, the pot was near $60. Not so fast he said, he had hit a full-house on the river (what he was doing staying in that long with two pairs, 4s and 5s I don't know. Motherfucker won the pot out from under me. I still think I played it right, but I was greedy trying to get more money out of him and I could have gone all in earlier, scared him out instead of letting him riverrat it, and taken home a smaller pot, probably breaking even for the night. Instead I went for it all, and ended up down $54. Grrrr. But I play to win, not to break even.
