Friday Morning in London
I haven't heard if my cousin and his family in London are OK, but I never talk to them anyway, so I probably won't hear any news until my parents forward me some group family email. Garret's emails from the UK continue to crack me up:
"So today I am at work as normal. There are very few people in yet (08:23) but that is not so unusual in the public sector. ;^) The Tube was fairly empty but again I come in before the main rush and a lttle after the mini-rush of people heading for the City (financial district), so I don't know how the day will pan out.
Anyway, the news this morning is of 37 confirmed fatalities and that is expected to rise to 50-55 from what I read, so the terrorists are perhaps not quite the underachievers (in terrorism terms) as I suggested yesterday, although this is no New York or Madrid. Some Islamic nutters' website said that London was "cowering in fear "- I have to say I did my cowering while drinking a cool beer overlooking the Thames and most Londoners were equally unfazed and headed for the bars and pubs. I worked out that if these guys managed ten attacks like this per week for the next 9 years, they would reach the level of fatalities that the Luftwaffe managed in the 1940s, which famously didn't break the determination of the Brits, so what these twats imagine they will achieve is just incomprehensible to me.
You can read the reactions of Londoners (and others) on the BBC at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/4659237.stm - personally I find these more interesting than the pictures, and you will get a representative view of the range of reactions. There are also links to cameraphone pictures and videos from commuters caught up in the blasts.
Cheers, Garret"
