I used to love that Found It! column in the Rocket (which Tablet may soon get) and I'm digging on Found Magazine (who's editor will be here next week doing two readings). I found some fraternity president at the UW's disk today, this stuff rules...
"Mr. XXX, Univ. of Wash. Interfraternity Council -
This letter is in response to information received by the University of Washington Interfraternity Council alleging that xxxxx xxxx Alpha Fraternity violated IFC rules.
Concerning the function occurring on xx March, 20xx, xxxxx xxxx Alpha has been accused of:
- Being cited for Underage Drinking
For this allegation, xxxxx xxxx Alpha does not allow underage drinking at our chapter house; however, we acknowledge the prevalence of drinking in college and recognize the need for sound alcohol policies. We work hard to limit the guests allowed into our house and to control our access to our alcohol.
On 31 March, 2004 I was patrolling the party making sure that our social function was up to standards with rules and regulations. The social chairmen and myself regulate the guest list for our house. The social invited friends from Spokane and our door duty volunteers where made aware of the situation. His friends came, however another group of Spokane kids came and said they knew our Social when in all actuality they did not. These 6 Spokane men were trouble from their arrival, they antagonized other members of the house and around 12:30 these 6 were asked to leave xxxxx xxxx Alpha Fraternity. Unfortunately they came back soon after and threw an object through one of our windows shattering it and causing tempers to flare within the house as they sped away in a car. At 1:00 my volunteers were personally relieved of duty by myself and I regulated admission into xxxxx xxxx Alpha . At 2:00 I officially closed the party for the night.
As I was getting ready for bed around 3:30, I heard noise in the alley and saw that a few of my members were out in the alley confronting 3 of the Spokane “offenders” about our broken window. Sensing trouble, I quickly redressed and ran to diffuse the situation. The Spokane men had already phoned the Seattle police department and were talking with them as I came outside. When the police arrived the Spokane men scattered but I, and 3 other members of my house, stayed to talk to the police. After quick questioning myself, the 3 members of my house and the 3 Spokane men were all arrested at the scene. We were later released at the Seattle Precinct because of cooperation with the police.
I find it very frustrating that 3 of my members were deescalating a fight yet were arrested when staying outside to relay information to the police. I will not mislead you into thinking that I did not consume an alcoholic beverage, but 1 drink is unable to impair me to the police officer’s description.
This party was regulated with stamps for 21 year olds who showed proper ID at our door. Alcohol was regulated behind a bar and with a 21-year-old bartender. Standards instituted by the IFC were fulfilled on this social function. This incident happened after the social function had ended, I cannot control every decision that my members make even if I wanted too. In light of this, stricter wet function control policies have been brought to the house. Including, different colored wristbands indicating age distributed to every attendant of a social function, a stricter guest list policy run by myself, formation of a special task force of members to check bracelets during social functions who upon finding partiers without wristbands remove them from the function, all door codes are changed an hour before with myself and the house managers as the only ones in possession of these codes until after the function has ended.
Disciplinary measures have been taken against myself and the 3 other members of the house who were involved in the incident. We were put onto social probation for house-sponsored events and were also fined for our actions. Internally I believe we have sufficiently dealt with the situation and even though there was a citation for underage drinking in no way was alcohol distributed to minors.
I apoligize for the transgressions from my chapter house and I understand that our Greek System must continue to uphold high standards to maintain the dignity and respect we have earned from the University and its surrounding communities. I thank you for your patience and respect in handling this matter; you may continue to count on my full cooperation again whenever it renders itself necessary.
Sincerely,
xxx xxxx
